What Makes A Website Successful?
There was a time when I had no idea what made the internet work. I’m betting you were there once too. So, let’s have a discussion about what creates a successful website.
It doesn’t matter what kind of website you have. It could be a storefront or a blog about your favorite pet. The object of the website is getting it in front of people. If people can’t find it, it could be giving away free money and it would not be successful.
There are a few ways you could get it noticed. One way that people frequently try to promote their website is to advertise. And I am not saying advertising is not a good idea – it is always a good idea to get the info out there in front of people.
The great thing about the internet is it allows us a way to work smarter, not harder. So anything you can do to promote your site is a good thing.
Let’s think about the differences between traditional business and business on the world-wide-web. What’s different about the two?
It’s All About The Audience
Traditional business, unless you are a huge international business, you deal fairly local and buying ads and passing out business cards, putting your name in the ‘yellow pages’ works well.
The audience has changed with the technology of the ‘web’. Life has evolved and we must evolve with it – if we want to stay competitive and successful. Business is now worldwide.
Put The Ad In The Site
Use to be getting folks to your business meant they would be pulling up into a parking lot and walking into a physical building. Today, we don’t have to park and walk in. We are on the internet, on our phone, our IPads and iPods, our Androids and iPhones. Technology is the advertisement.
Let Me Explain
A business card would say a little blurb, state the phone number and a physical address so you would be able to find it. With business on a website, the information is similar, however, it directs us to a different place. The address is called a URL and it is the ‘address’ for the website (business), you would like to visit.
From Yellow Pages To Web pages
In order to get noticed on the internet, you type in an address or URL that will bring up a website and if you got it right, it will be what you are looking for. The internet is driven by search engines. Everything you input goes through a search and brings up options for you to choose from.
Options are pages of addresses of businesses. The URL or address is also called a ‘link’. You click the link and a website opens up for you to view. I know this all sounds so complicated. I suppose if you know nothing about it, it is a complex tapestry of information to unravel.
Let Me Explain The Search Process
We have an idea of what we are looking for. We are not sure exactly what to search so we try to think of things that we could put in that little search box that might bring up options for us to choose from or bring us closer to what we are looking for.
Say we want a new set of snow skis. We type ‘downhill ski’s’ into the search field and hit enter. All of a sudden pages and pages of businesses related to downhill ski’s floods our screen. That is because all those links that have appeared used the words ‘downhill ski’s’ somewhere in the description of their website. All the pages that did not come up – that are related to downhill skis did not use those exact words anywhere on their site. As this is merely an example, I am sure any business having something to do with downhill ski’s would use those words.
Oh My God! There Must Be A Million!
The first thing I would like to say is that because the first one is in the first position does not mean it is the best choice. It means that the search term used brought up that site. It may be a highly visited website and they may be the best choice, but simply coming up on the first page at the top of this page has no significance as to the success of the site. I might even be that the position is a paid position. These links are options and you must still visit them to determine which one is the best website for you.
Armed With Knowledge
Having a better idea of how we move around on the internet gives us an idea of how we can ‘program’ our website to get people to our webpages. These words we use for searches are called ‘keywords’. Some people call them ‘meta tags’.
As a business online, we are now webpage designers. As such, we must know how to create these ‘keywords’ that give our website a competitive edge. We are competing with millions of businesses now instead of the family store around the corner. We compete with businesses in Austrailia and Canada, Germany and Britian and Mexico. We are global now – not local.
Being Armed with the right set of tools is imparitive even more today as our competition is global.
There are millions of ‘tools’ available out there to use. And I am sure many of them are quite good at what they do for you. As a business person on the world-wide-web, I use a tool called Jaaxy.
What a wonderfully simple program that offers so many tools that help us take our web pages out of the dark and into the light.
Let Me Explain
As an internet marketer, I write about subjects that pertain to my business model. Honestly, Sometime coming up with ideas on what to write about can be somewhat taxing. If I had to do it without tools, I would be lost before I got started.
Jaaxy helps me decide on a topic, find the perfect title and gain valuable information on who is looking for what and how popular what I am writing about can be or will not be.
This saves me a Ton of time trying to come up with the right catch phrase or description to incorporate onto my site that will assure people coming to my site. It shows me how close to the top of that first page of searches I will show up.
Honestly, the first page is where you want to be. Very few people go to the second page. Most of the links folks will choose will be right there on the first page. But I don’t have to tell you that.
No doubt you have done a search before. How many pages did you go through? Was your choice on the first page?
You also know your own habits on the web. You are armed with information as a consumer that will help you as a business person as you already know your habits.
Jaaxy will help you find the right words, show you the statistics on those words and give variations of the words or terms you will use. It also gives you other very important information based on your choice of terms used.
